Marshmallows contain gelatin. It’s derived from the collagen inside animal skin and bones. So if you’re vegetarian, you really, really cannot eat marshmallows.
Most cheeses are fine for vegetarians, but Parmesan cheese, in particular, presents a problem. To be certified as real Parmesan cheese, the dairy product must be prepared using animal rennet, which comes from a baby calf, according to the Vegetarian Society.
This milky, jiggly dessert is always so tempting. But traditionally, gelatin is used to set the milk, so, unfortunately, panna cotta isn’t vegetarian.
