DURBAN - JOCKEY Grant van Niekerk said Linebacker’s temperament was a big factor in helping them win the 35th running of the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Saturday.

“Linebacker did very well during the training and I was very confident. He has an amazing temperament and is easy to ride, which makes a jockey’s job easier,” he said. According to Van Niekerk, Linebacker has made a remarkable footprint in placing first in the past few months.

“He won the Cape Derby over 2000m at Kenilworth in February and the World Sports Betting Guineas over 1 600m four weeks ago. The race has a proud history of producing high-class winners, many of whom have gone on to win or be placed in the Vodacom Durban July,” said Graeme Hawkins from Gold Circle.

Linebacker has also been announced as the joint favourite for the Vodacom Durban July, along with Got The Greenlight, the Daily News 2000 winner last year.

Meanwhile, Rascallion, Linebacker's stable companion, placed second, while Kommetdieding took third place in the Daily News 2000 main race.

Linebacker and Rascallion will be facing each other again during the Vodacom Durban July.

“Vaughan Marshall trained Linebacker and other horses very well. I have got on very well with Linebacker since partnering with him in his last three starts and he clearly loves me too. We are ready for the July,” enthused Van Niekerk.

Daily News editor Ayanda Mdluli presented the trophies to the jockeys at the event.

“I would like to congratulate Linebacker, Grant van Niekerk as well as Linebackers’s owners, Ken and Jane Truter. We were expecting a win as Linebacker is, in fact, one of our favourites. We wish them all the best for the Vodacom July,” said Mdluli.

The Daily News 2000 is an annual event for 3-year-olds.
