The conviction of ANC Youth League spokesman Floyd Shivambu smacks of a witch hunt, the organisation's president Julius Malema said on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the ANC's national disciplinary committee found Shivambu guilty of misconduct for swearing at a journalist, and for accusing the ruling party of associating with imperialists in a statement.
Malema told reporters in Joburg that Shivambu had issued the statement on behalf of the league and not in his personal capacity.
“He (Shivambu) was not the author.”
Shivambu was suspended from the party for three years and told to vacate his position as spokesman.
“He remains an employee of the youth league until the youth league decides to retrench him,” said Malema.
“You don't have to be elected as a spokesperson of the youth league.”
Malema said it was not right for Shivambu to be fired for being a contact person on a statement. – Sapa
