At least 16 people were killed and 29 injured when a bus plunged into a ravine on Saturday in Bangladesh, police said.

The bus carrying 45 passengers dropped about 150 metres in the south-eastern district of Bandarban, 250 kilometres south-east of Dhaka, leaving 11 people dead at the scene.

Five others died en route to hospital, district police chief Kamrul Ahsan said.

Soldiers and police searched the remote hilly terrain and sent the injured to hospitals in Bandarban and Chittagong, he said.

Ahsan said the death toll could rise because many survivors were in critical condition. - Sapa-dpa
