A man is in critical condition after he apparently threw himself in front of a moving train.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (JEMS) workers used the Jaws of Life to get the unidentified man out from underneath a Metrorail train at Dube railway station after the collision on Thursday morning.
“We got a call at about 9am that a man had thrown himself onto the train tracks. Fortunately he didn’t die, but he lost his legs. It really was hectic, he was lying underneath the train and both legs were broken,” said JEMS spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.
The man is believed to be from Dube and aged about 40, but was still unidentified on Thursday as he did not have any identification on him. He was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
“He might have family, we don’t know. He might be someone’s father. We just appeal to people to seek help before trying to take their lives. There are family members one can speak to, there are also NGOs one can visit,” said Mulaudzi.
He added that it was becoming an increasingly common occurrence that people were trying to commit suicide in train stations around Soweto.
“Some people climb onto the pedestrian crossings and wait for the trains to appear,” Mulaudzi said. “It’s a miracle this man survived, because most of the time, people die immediately from the collisions.”
He said that a week or two ago, a man was injured at Phefeni railway station while train surfing.
Metrorail spokesman Tony Games said there was a short delay in train services after the collision as emergency workers attended to the man, but services were back to normal within an hour of the scene being cleared.
Mulaudzi urged people thinking of committing suicide to contact their control services on 011 375 6000 so that they could get in touch with a chaplain. - The Star

Yeh Don Mood makes me sick. I can never fathom how you can go on in life knowing that you're a murderer and still feel as though you're good enough to walk the very same streets we do and breathe the very same air. He should've thought about his actions. he is a sicko, but I don't believe he did this on his own. where are the accomplices? shouldn't they suffer the consequences too?

@ Frank Dlamini. Well said Frank. He's as guilty as sin and obviously didn't realise when he went to jail what a lifeless, difficult life he's going to lead. Well, good luck to him. Lock him up and throw away the key. He's a sleaze ball.

The best way to commit suicide is to walk the streets of Hillbrow or Diepsloot in the middle of the night. There you will get a nice clean bullet hole in your head, quick and with less pain. Also, no one will be traumatised by your messy body parts.

MOODALEY - IOL .. why dont you allow for comments on DONAVAN MOODALEY ??? When you do the crime than you should also do the time. This "cry-baby" should now make peace with the fact that he is going to be incarcerated for a loooooong time. I am now sick and tired of his antics. What about the victim ???
