A fire broke out in a sauna in Sandton's Michelangelo Hotel, Johannesburg Emergency Services said on Friday.

Spokesperson Percy Morokane said the fire happened in the hotel's spa area on the eighth floor just before 8am. Nobody was injured.

He said the hotel had an excellent fire protection system and once smoke detectors sensed the fire, sprinklers were activated.

Three fire stations, from Alexandra, Sandton and Northview, arrived on the scene and helped put out the rest of the fire.

Morokane said it was possible the fire was sparked by an electrical fault with the wiring in the ceiling. Most hotel guests were in the building at the
time of the fire because it happened so early.

"Credit should go to the hotel group. It had an excellent fire system in place."

Morokane said there was smoke and water damage to the spa area. - Sapa
