Two Western Cape police constables were arrested for armed robbery on Thursday morning, police said.

The policemen, stationed at Milnerton and Langa, with three other men allegedly robbed a man of three boxes of jewellery worth R23 000 and R12 000 in cash, said Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

The man was opening a gate at his Nyanga home on Wednesday night when he was approached by five men who introduced themselves as police officers and asked for directions.

"While the victim was busy giving directions, the suspects suddenly robbed him of his valuables."

When he screamed for help, the suspects allegedly fled in a black VW Golf and a
white Renault Laguna with the jewellery boxes and cash.

A neighbour who managed to get one of the vehicles' plate number gave it to the police, who traced its ownership to a Milnerton police officer.

The other three men were still at large.

The policemen, aged 28 and 37, would appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
