The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating three police officers for allegedly assaulting a man who later died in Mthatha on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Captain Zamukulungisa Jozana said one of the officers was the neighbour of the 33-year-old man whom he allegedly suspected of stealing his razor wire fence.
The officer and two of his colleagues abducted the man from his home in Matyengqina A/A and took him to a bridge where they assaulted him and left him.
The man managed to crawl back to his house, where he told a neighbour about his assault.
He died in his sleep and his body was found in his house on Tuesday morning.
Police opened a murder case against the officers and the ICD was investigating the case.
