A family of four returning from their Knysna holiday, died on Saturday after the car they were travelling in hit a tree on the N1 north highway near the Grasmere toll plaza, Johannesburg Metro police said.
"It appears that the driver of the vehicle lost control of the car and hit a tree on the side of the road... the impact was so great that the car actually split in half," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.
"The mother, father and their two teenage children perished in the accident."
He said the family were on their way home to Pretoria from Knysna.
"The cause of this accident will be investigated further," he said. - Sapa
