Landmine operation pays off in Mozambique

Maputo - Four of Mozambique's provinces - Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula in the north and central Zambezia - have been declared free of landmines, the government said.
Mozambique would be free of landmines by 2014, deputy foreign affairs minister Eduardo Koloma told a ceremony to celebrate International Day for Mine Awareness in Maputo on Monday.
Koloma said nationally, 223 landmine areas or 2.2 million square metres had been cleared.
A total of 1 400 mines were located and destroyed while a further 844 devices were not exploded. - Sapa
