A multi-million rand extension to the international terminal building of the OR Tambo International Airport was unveiled on Sunday.

The R535-million international pier, an extension to the international terminal building, served to ease the flow of the 7,9-million international passengers passing through the airport each year.

Airport general manager Chris Hlekane said at the unveiling: "It gives me great pleasure to usher in OR Tambo's era of infrastructural development delivery as we mark the opening of the pier.

"For us, this opening marks an important milestone in OR Tambo's pursuit to accurately reflect our status as the gateway to Africa."

The extension includes additional holding lounges, airside commercial areas and boarding gates.

Departure and arrival areas have also been extended.

The pier was fitted with energy efficient light fittings and energy-saving escalators, operating on demand, making the new facility environmentally friendly.

The second phase of the project was expected to be completed in July 2008 - this includes a retail mall and new mezzanine lounges.

"With one of our largest infrastructural developments now in operation, we are confident that our airport precinct will be a construction-free zone by early 2010," Hlekane said. - Sapa
